With multiple patents already filed, Grafoid is currently engaged in the development of numerous graphene joint ventures globally in the areas of renewable energy and portable energy storage and air purification. One of the products is Spongycarbon, a graphene sponge based product. Due to the high surface area and tailorable surface properties of this new product, Grafoid plans to expand the product application area to air purification by collaborating with Prof. Zhongchao Tan at the University of Waterloo. Dr. Tan and Grafoid will collaborate on improving Spongycarbon's ability in air purification aiming at typical volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It aims at the specific applications to capture the common air pollutants in the paints/coating of house and furniture industries such as formaldehyde, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and acetone. However, the company lacks the facility and experts in clean air technology development and does not understand the adsorption principles behind the special material when it is used for air cleaning. Therefore they will conduct this collaborative research project. A deeper understanding of the product's performance characteristics will allow Grafoid to successfully apply these high-tech materials and to launch high performance products to the domestic and international markets. It will create impetus for long term collaboration between the researcher and the industrial partner, and, as the company rolls out new, higher quality air purification products for industrial and residential application, will contribute to the protection of the environment in Canada.
