NOVA Chemicals is involved in the development of novel polymerization catalysts allowing the generation of polyolefins with long branches. In order to determine the specific branching characteristics they need to achieve desirable physical properties, they require model polymers with well-defined branching characteristics. We propose a path for the synthesis of model branched polyethylene, based on the copolymerization of a monomer with selected macromonomers having a terminal unsaturation (to form the long branches), and followed by hydrogenation of the branched polymer structure. This Engage Grant will focus on the preparation of the target macromonomers as the first and most critical step of the synthetic process.
