3D Wideband Acoustic Noise Cancellation for Large Volumes

As our cities grow and their population densities increase, acoustic noise becomes a major problem facing urban communities. Detrimental effects of acoustic noise have been well documented. Thus far, the most successful ways of reducing unwanted acoustic noise have included passive insulating material placed between the noise source and the area of interest. While this works reasonably well for high frequency noise, it is not particularly effective at lower frequencies. More importantly, the obtrusive nature of passive insulation prevents this method from being used in many cases. The proposed project is a new partnership between Alphatron Technology and SFU researchers with the goal to investigate the feasibility of wideband active noise cancellation (ANC) in large volumes. Such a system would allow the user to move around a large area, such as a room or an office, and would reduce the unwanted noise without the need to carry headphones or stay close to the system's microphones and loudspeakers. The potential impact of such as solution on noise reduction in residential, commercial and public buildings is enormous.
