As the demand for energy increases, so does the cost of consuming that energy. This trend is accelerating as the
capacity for energy production peaks. Customers are becoming increasingly interested in knowing how to
conserve energy, as well as reducing their energy cost. They are also interested in understanding why their
power bill fluctuates. Energy bill fluctuation can prompt customers to call their power utility asking about their
bill, which puts additional pressure on the utility company's customer service department.
Power utilities have few tools available to help diagnose a customer's power usage: the aggregate billing
amount, the weather, and some other local environmental conditions. However, there is currently no way to
determine what loads may have been running in a house ? useful information that would benefit the customer
in understanding his/her power consumption habits. Customers can make smart and informed energy
conservation choices once they are able to understand how they consume power. The proposed research project
brings together researchers from SFU and BCHydro with the goal of developing computational methods to
analyze smart meter data that will help model, understand, and inform customers about their power
consumption habits.
