There are many solutions exist for treating bilge water. However, almost all of them use some form of gravity separation and forth floatation for removal of oil from water, which have limitations such as (i) oil particles that are twenty micrometers or smaller cannot get separated and (ii) variety of oily wastes in bilge water can limit removal efficiency, especially when very dense and highly viscous oils such as bunker oil are present. Electrochemical methods for froth flotation are effective but expensive. Bioremediation of oily-water is economically viable, but an on-board application is impractical due to requirement of large holding time. The objectives of the current research work are: (i) economic evaluation of all the existing bilge water treatment technologies and (ii) develop a laboratory scale treatment train for treatment of bilge water for removal of the contaminants as well as recover the oil.
