项目摘要

This grant application seeks funding to enable a new research partnership between the applicant and Read Jones Christoffersen Ltd. (RJC). RJC is an engineering consulting firm that specialize in retrofit and rehabilitation of existing structures. For reinforced concrete, an efficient repair method includes patching the existing structural member with a cement-based material. The two materials (the native/original concrete and the repair material) must have a perfect bond between them in order to ensure that the repaired structural member fulfills its performance objective. otherwise, a bond failure will occur. Bond failure could lead to the collapse of the structure, thus jeopardizing the public safety. The objective of this study is to determine the bond strength between native concrete and the repair material 1) for different compressive strength of the repair material and 2) for different procedures for surface preparation. The results of this study will be used to establish design guidelines to be used by RJC. The expected outcome of this project is two folds: 1) an efficient repair process, translating to lower repair cost, and 2) safer structures.
