Rising energy costs, coupled with an increases public focused on environmentally responsible products is pushing vehicle
manufacturers to produce more efficient vehicles for both ground and air travel. One major means to increase efficiency is
through light-weighting reducing the weight of the vehicle so that it requires less energy to achieve the same performance.
Light-weighting efforts are driving the use of advanced materials, and particularly composites. However, as these materials
are new and radically different from traditional materials, there are a range of manufacturing challenges that need to be
overcome to ensure they can be successfully implemented.
CVD Diamond Corporation, located in London, Ontario, is a provider of diamond coatings for cutting tooling which is used on
non-ferrous materials including carbon and glass fibre composites. CVD Diamond has partnered with the McMaster
Manufacturing Research Institute at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario to work on improving and optimizing diamond
coated tools which are instrumental for high productivity manufacturing of parts made using composites.
