Improved modelling of managed watersheds in the Canadian Shield in support of hydropower reservoir management

Hydropower companies regularly use hydrological models to make long-term and short-term forecasts of inflows to hydroelectricity reservoirs. These inflow predictions are used for water level and outflow management in support of energy production and, in the long term, for capital investment decisions. This research is intended to identify improved means by which to develop and apply these hydrological models to watersheds in the Canadian Shield, which is characterized by interconnected lake systems with shallow soils sitting atop bedrock. In addition, specialized means of handling uncertain managed inflows (i.e., streamflows controlled by water managers upstream) will be developed. These improved models and methods will improve partnering organization Ontario Power Generation's capacity to plan for future weather and climate conditions, benefiting their day-to-day hydroelectricity revenues and reducing long-term capital investment costs.
