英文摘要
Aquaculture was first introduced in Canada to enhance natural fish stocks but has since grown into a
large-scale commercial industry providing income to many local and regional economies across Canada. The
use of Arctic Char as a commercially viable species in the food fish industry is growing and is particularly
attractive as a species for aquaculture in Northern communities. Flesh quality is a key end point in the
production of farmed fish, with exercise having a pronounced effect on a variety of biochemical and cellular
parameters improving muscle quality. The Myera tank design is a novel tank design making use of airlift
mechanisms for generating flow and directing waste in a closed aquaculture system. However, the effectiveness
of the tank design has yet to be examined in a production setting. The proposed research will partner Myera
group with fish physiology and aquaculture expertise at the University of Manitoba. The research will examine
the effects of exercise using the novel tank design on growth rate, food conversion efficiency, and fish health of
cultured Arctic Char. The results will inform full scale aquaculture practices as the company works to establish
optimal tank conditions for the production of Arctic Char as a commercially viable aquaculture species in the
province of Manitoba.
