This requested grant will fund a new partnership between a research group in chemistry at the University of Victoria and Hitachi High Technologies Canada. The project involves the design of holder for sample characterization using a Hitachi scanning transmission electron holography microscope (STEHM). The STEHM system (Hitachi HF-3300V ) is hosted at the Center for Advanced Materials and Related Technologies (CAMTEC) at the University of Victoria. The proposed activities involve direct collaboration between a postdoctoral fellow, a CAMTEC research scientist and a Hitachi Engineer. The goal is to evaluate the requirements for the holder implementation and provide a design. The uniqueness of the holder is that it will allow the coupling of optical excitation simultaneous to STEEM imaging. The design will then require numerical calculations to define the best approach for optical integration and evaluation of mechanical parts and holder that will best couple to the holder space in the microscope. The final product of this six month research project will be a design recommendation for the implementation of the holder. This holder has the potential to become a new product in the Hitachi Canada line of electron microscopy accessories.
