The proposed research involves the development of a prototype for the monitoring on hormones contaminants and their metabolites in water samples. The operation principle of the prototype was based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), which is a laser based method that allow detection of small amounts of analytes adsorbed on a nanostructured metallic surface. The project will be developed in collaboration with AXYS Analytica, a Vancouver Island company specialized in ultra-trace analysis (very low amounts) of contaminants in water. AXYS is a World leader in water analysis and will provide guidance during the prototype development stages and also help with its validation. As a proof of concept, the project will concentrate in one particular class of fluoroquinolone contaminants, but extension to other compounds (and their metabolic products) can be pursued in the future.
