英文摘要
Today's search for new resources advances exploration in remote cold regions and arid zones. In Canada, the province of Quebec has recently announced Le plan nord. Moreover, the Middle East and African countries have invested aggressively in the development of their arid areas. Such rapid developments in remote cold regions and arid zones might have important negative consequences including the generation of waste and the production of emissions, which very likely to create irreversible negative impacts on the environment if they are not restrained by the application of adequate technologies. Unfortunately, the reality is that today's commonly used technologies are not efficient in extreme climate conditions. The main objective of this five-year project is the development of new technologies, efficiently operating in extreme weather conditions, that will treat residential and industrial slurries as well as liquid and solid waste. A series of sub-projects will address particular issues associated with wastewater and sludge treatment and the energy recovery from waste and gas emissions. Previous work proved that the electrokinetic phenomena and certain electrochemical methods combined with other processes permitted to significantly enhance the treatment efficiency and that independently of temperature. The project will address the development of new treatment facilities that will be flexible to dramatic flow rate change and that will permit complete nutrient, carbon, metal, and endocrine disruptor removal. Extended investigations of mix microbial consortium and membrane filtration processes will be investigated for modular and for mobile systems adapted to remote locations. New technologies will eliminate large ponds and decrease devastating impacts on permafrost and air quality. Investigation of sequestration of CO2 will be also carried out. Besides bringing a valuable contribution to knowledge, the outcomes from this research will be immediately applicable to the industry, compounds and aboriginal villages in the Canadian northern territories and in other northern. The research's outcomes in regards to elevated temperature conditions can be applied by Canadian companies in the Gulf region and in African countries.
