A large number of concrete structures in Canada and worldwide are in an alarming condition, often resulting from poor quality construction materials and/or practices, and exposure to severe environmental conditions. Many of those will be replaced or will require extensive remedial work for extending their service life. It will then be crucial to apply design/construction practices for improving the long-term performance of the new or the aging concrete structures. At the same time, the tight financial situation, the progressive shortage of quality materials close to urban centres, and the implementation of sustainable development principles, will result in an increase use of materials with marginal or unknown properties/long-term field performance.
