A large number of concrete structures in Canada and worldwide are in an alarming condition, often resulting from poor quality construction materials and/or practices, and exposure to severe environmental conditions. Many of those will be replaced or will require extensive remedial work for extending their service life. It will then be crucial to apply design/construction practices for improving the long-term performance of the new or the aging concrete structures. At the same time, the tight financial situation, the progressive shortage of quality materials close to urban centres, and the implementation of sustainable development principles, will result in an increase use of materials with marginal or unknown properties/long-term field performance.The objectives of the research program are to develop a better understanding of the mechanisms, factors and practices influencing the long-term performance of A) preventive measures against deleterious expansion and cracking in new concrete structures incorporating "reactive" aggregates (i.e. alkali-reactive or sulphide-bearing aggregates, recycled aggregates) and alternative supplementary cementing materials (ASCMs; e.g. industrial waste/post consumer materials), and B) materials, methods and practices used for mitigating deterioration in existing concrete infrastructures. The results of the research will contribute at developing models, behaviour laws and reliable recommendations/practices for extending the design life of new concrete constructions and the service life of aging concrete structures.
