Sow nutrition is an important aspect of sustainable pork production, which is a delicate balance between optimal production (i.e., balance feed costs with sow reproductive performance) and environmental impacts (i.e., minimize nutrient excretion). Mathematical models are used increasingly for factorial estimation of nutrient requirements of swine across a broad spectrum of production potentials, physiological states and environmental conditions, and for individual sow units. Furthermore, to minimize environmental contamination from excessive nitrogen excretion, reduced dietary protein diets are recommended by more closely matching dietary amino acid supply with requirements. There is a severe lack of data needed for development and validation of factorial-derived amino acid and energy requirements of sows throughout the reproductive cycle.
