英文摘要
The two technologies for nutrient removal from municipal wastewater that have been gaining research and development attention over the last decade are aerobic granular sludge (AGS) and partial nitritation-anammox (PNA). The AGS process employs biomass that is much denser in structure than conventional biomass used so far in Canadian plants and allows achievement of a plant footprint that is 30% of that for conventional systems, with significantly lower aeration energy demand. The PNA process allows for removal of ammonia nitrogen (a toxic compound) without the use of expensive external carbon source and allows for 60% less aeration requirements than conventional treatment, reducing costs by30%. In order to bring these technologies to full-scale in Canada, pilot demonstrations must be performed. This project will examine the operational requirements of a continuous AGS process for total nutrient removal, as well as PNA process to address total nitrogen removal from high-strength sludge dewatering liquors (SDL), as well as from low-strength mainstream sewage. Pilot studies will be conducted at Winnipeg's North End Water Pollution Control Center (NEWPCC) to obtain parameters for full-scale design, allowing for consulting firms to become more comfortable with proposing the processes in future bids. The two processes have never been used in Canada and the research will test the development of conditions that fit Canadian climate. The NEWPCC is well suited as it has Canada's first dedicated SDL treatment facility and will immediately benefit from the results of this research. The developed knowledge base will benefit both the City of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba. Other universities will benefit from the opening of large research and development opportunities to tailor local wastewater treatment facilities to the requirements of the new process and thus develop new knowledge and provide HQP training opportunities. Municipalities across Canada will gain access to directions on how to upgrade to higher efficiency and lower costs process.
