Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an approach that manages services by abstracting the lower level functionality of a network. SDN provides open interfaces to develop software that are capable of controlling the connection between a set of network entities and a provision to monitor and modify the traffic flow in the network. The scope of the project is to develop a protocol that interfaces between the application and the data plane networking devices using SDN's layered architecture. It provides a scalable and efficient manner of controlling multiple networks. The protocol will be implemented in an industrial-strength testbed and tested with a range of scenarios. We will measure the performance and overhead incurred by the protocol, comparing it to various non-standard-compliant existing alternatives.
