Coatings are widely used to protect ducts and cyclones used in the treatment of flue gases released due to combustion processes in furnaces, boilers, and steam generators used in, e.g., power generation applications. Such gases are contain fly ash particulates whose constituents vary depending on the application, but are generally mostly in the form of 5-300 um aluminum oxide, silicon dioxide, or calcium oxide particles. Cyclones are often used to remove these particulates, as a first 'precleaning' step to flue gas treatment. In such devices, the gas is accelerated in a spiral vortex and the larger particles are carried by their inertia to the cylone wall, eventually dropping into a conical collection hopper.
