PhytoSpherixTM nanoparticles are a nontoxic, biodegradable proprietary biomaterial generated by Mirexus Inc. (Guelph, ON) from Ontario-grown sweet corn. Each nanoparticle consists of a single molecule of highly-branched glucose homopolymer, providing a uniform surface physico-chemistry to which active ingredients can be conjugated. PhytoSpherixTM is especially suited for use in a wide range of applications for nutraceuticals, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and biomedical applications. It can be modified by adding functional groups or various active pharmaceutical ingredients e.g. antibiotics. This last feature is pertinent: over the last decades few new antibiotics have entered the market, which is a globally-recognised concern.
