We are requesting a glovebox, which allows sample preparation and experiments to be conducted under an inert atmosphere. This glovebox will replace my >40 year old glovebox that failed during the previous year and will be used mainly to support a highly productive collaboration with Prof. Laurel Schafer. This project involves the synthesis, characterization and reactivity studies of late transition metals bearing N,O chelating ligands (details below). Most of the metal complexes and ligands that we use require the rigourous exclusion of air and moisture, and thus need to be handled under an inert atmosphere. Our future focus is on reactive earth-abundant transition metal complexes that are not chemically compatible with the other projects in our respective groups, meaning that other gloveboxes cannot be used for this project. Thus, without the requested equipment, this project would not be able to continue. The proposed configuration allows sample preparation and experiments to be conducted under an inert atmosphere. Never gloveboxes are also cheaper to operate; they include mini-antechambers, which require substantially less inert gas. The inclusion of water and air sensors will maximize the utility of the equipment and minimize decomposition of materials due to undetected contamination of the atmosphere.
