Transportation systems are responsible for 25% of Canada's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, of which just under half are from heavy duty trucks and is expected to continue to grow. While electrification approaches are suitable for GHG reduction in light duty and fleet applications, long-distance, heavy duty applications require additional strategies. In this project, the use of industrial waste hydrogen as a fuel for conventional diesel engines will be evaluated. In particular, a combination of on and off-road, vehicle testing, as well as engine testing will be used to identify strategies to maximize GHG reduction, with no emission or performance penalties, relative to conventional diesel engines.
