英文摘要
This research investigates challenges in physics based character animation. Data driven techniques allow for high quality animations, but producing a natural plausible motion for a virtual human becomes difficult when changes to the environment or character are introduced. The approach I follow is to use physics based simulation, in the creation of new tools for character editing, and in the development of controllers that allow a virtual character to interactively produce a physically correct response. This proposal involves dexterous motions of hands during manipulation as well as full body motion, with the approach that both physics, and a data driven methods involving capture motion and forces presents a collection of new editing and controller design strategies. The research also addresses the development of new approximations and models for the simulation of deformation and contact because fast and accurate simulations of complex passive phenomena will have many benefits, including faster learning of discrete event driven character controllers. This work has applications in games, training, ergonomics, rehabilitation, and robotics, and will be of benefit to within the computer animation industry, in which Canada has been a pioneer and continues to have a strong industrial presence.
