The problem of supplying electricity to remote communities in Canada is becoming challenging in particularwhen considering renewable energy sources. The restrictions on expanding the electric power network tosupply electricity to these remote communities is considered economically infeasible. SNC Lavalin is currentlyinterested in investigating the feasibility of using a mix of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar inaddition to the energy storage systems to provide on-site generation mix for these communities. The proposedresearch project aims to provide a tool that can assist SNC Lavalin to optimally identifying the proper sizingand types of this mix of generation/storage. This project will be a joint effort on the part of UOIT and SNCLavalin, and they will operate as a team throughout this project. The technology developed in this researchproject will benefit Canadian electric power companies by identifying the most economical way of addressingthe adequacy and the efficiency of supplying power to rural and remote communities in Canada. The outcomeof this research project will significantly enhance the quality of life of Canadians in the remote communities byincreasing the reliability, resiliency and efficiency of their electricity systems.
