In the past few years, the technology of smart metering infrastructure has gained so much attention within the electric power utilities. Millions of dollars have been spent on installing Smart Meters but energy savings and financial benefits have not been realized as result of installing this infrastructure. With the installation of Smart Meters there are large amounts of data being collected but not being used by homeowners or local distribution companies. Disaggregation using a statistical approach for extracting end-use and or appliance level data from an aggregated energy profile is the most cost effective and scalable solution for getting and presenting this data. This project aims to investigate the potential of disaggregating the energy consumption data of residential consumers of Whitby Hydro Electric Corporation using the data collected from the smart meters. The main benefits of such investigation is to identify the energy waste and hence determine potential opportunities to improve the energy conservation programs. This is strategically important as it will help local distribution companies to improve their energy conservation program by turning them more effective. Also the outcome of the proposed research work will assist with customers' services and will assist with reaching residential conservation targets by providing more engagement with the residential customers. Also the outcome of the proposed research project will result in reducing the carbon footprint in the province by increasing the engagement of more customers into the energy programs offered in Ontario.
