All Natural Nutritional Products (ANNP) Inc. is a research-based Natural Health Product company thatproduces and markets high quality nutraceutical supplements licensed by Health Canada. The two principals ofthe company are Dr. Ronald R. Marquardt and Dr. S. Li. ANNP, in a new venture, is interested in bringing bulkquantities of two high-value and widely used natural products, rutin and its aglycone, quercetin, to thenutraceuticals market. These natural products can be extracted from buckwheat forage. It will be necessary tofirst demonstrate that the two products can be economically produced in a laboratory-based study as proposedin the Engage Grant application. Dr. John Sorensen, Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry,University of Manitoba, will develop a study designed to optimize the extraction, isolation and purification ofrutin from buckwheat and then the hydrolytic production of quercetin from rutin. The Sorensen lab hasextensive experience in Natural Products Chemistry, and has a well-equipped laboratory and the support staffcapable of carrying out all aspects of the proposed research. It is anticipated that the project will result in thedevelopment of simple, innovative, unique and inexpenseive method for the production of the two products. The optimized procedures will then be scaled up in a pilot plant study followed by the industrial production ofthe two products in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Manitoba. Dr. Sorensen's research will enableANNP to competitively and profitably produce the two high value nutraceuticals from a locally produced crop. The research will form the basis for establishing a new and profitable industry in Canada.
