Wheat is Canada's largest crop and the single biggest export earner of all our agricultural products. Soil and stubble born fungal diseases of wheat and canola are recognized as one of the main obstacles for the increase in production in Canada and around the world. In 2014, KGS Group isolated ten (10) unique bacteria strains from Manitoba soils. During 2016-2018, laboratory, greenhouse and field testing showed a remarkable ability for the strains to enhance growth in wheat, and then canola. In 2018, University of Manitoba and KGS Group personnel carried out several laboratory tests on the strains, discovering that three (3) KGS strains have antifungal properties. This project will develop novel chemical technology to optimize the extraction of the novel bioactive molecules from the KGS Group strains of bacteria. The KGS strains will be prepared and grown in the Sorensen lab using well established protocols. In addition, The complete characterization of the chemical structure of the isolated molecules will be carried out using a combination of spectroscopic techniques (NMR, and MS). Subsequent to this the antifungal activity assays will also be carried out in the Sorensen lab using existing techniques. Dr. John Sorensen is an expert in natural products chemistry with a particular focus on bioactive molecules produced by microorganisms. Dr. Stan Lozecznik from KGS group will be involved in all aspects of this project in an ongoing basis through a number of regularly scheduled meetings.Understanding the molecular basis for the plant growth promoting effects of the proprietary KGS strains in wheat and canola is critical towards commercialization and market development for these beneficial antifungal strains. This project will help KGS Group develop novel crop protection products for the agricultural sector. This will be essential for the diversification of the services offered by KGS Group.
