Almost 80% of isolated communities and mining sites across Canada rely on diesel generators for energy production, which is an expensive and polluting solution. Using hybrid power systems for those communities improve considerably the energy production by including renewable energy sources and storage technologies, thus reducing the fossils fuels consumption, the associated greenhouse emissions and elevated costs. However, the integration of renewable energies is not without difficulties. Indeed, most microgrids in remote location are characterized by important logistic and technical constraints, often ignored by the existing software applications, which leads to inappropriate sizing and poor financial estimations.SG2B is a company developing software solutions focusing on the simulation of energy production, transmission and distribution systems. In the context of this project, SG2B will increase its software's capabilities by including off-grid hybrid power system applications such as solutions panning, sizing and performance analysis. The TechnoCentre eolien will accompany SG2B by carrying on an exhaustive identification of existing constraints related to hybrid systems deployment and by providing a clear identification of the technical, logistical and financial aspects that must be considered to maximize the software's accuracy.Students of the Cegep de la Gaspesie et des Iles will directly benefit from the knowledge acquired in the context of this project. Specifically, they will familiarize themselves with the positive impacts of integrating renewable energy solutions on the environment and on the economy.
