VTEC: Vehicle Technology & Energy Centre (2015)

Manitoba is a major transportation hub for North America with a strong manufacturing presence which employs approximately 6,500 individuals, or about 10% of Manitoba's manufacturing workforce. Heavy vehicle manufacturing products account annually for about $2 billion in sales and approximately $1 billion (or about 10%) of the province's total exports. Red River College (RRC) has successfully worked with the heavy vehicle manufacturing sector for more than a decade, undertaking applied research projects valued at more than $5 million; but needs additional capacity. RRC is establishing the Vehicle Technology & Energy Centre (VTEC) to better serve the needs of the heavy vehicle manufacturing sector and enhance RRC's vehicle technology-related applied research capabilities and capacity; leading to positive economic and social impacts in the province and across Manitoba. VTEC will specialize in Vehicle Performance and Vehicle Development, responding to the requirements of OEMs and their suppliers; while obtaining research results which will also benefit fleet operators seeking to improve fuel efficiency and/or reduce emissions. VTEC will enable greater innovation of new and improved vehicle technologies in the sector, improve industry productivity and competitiveness, and support jobs; while better preparing the next generation of skilled workers. VTEC will catalyze ongoing research with existing partners and present outstanding opportunities for new partners to work with RRC to innovate, export, and thrive in the new global economy.
