Additive manufacturing (AM) as an alternative method to traditional fabrication techniques continues to expand as a viable option for commercial applications of complex component manufacturing. There is significant industry pull within Manitoba and Canada to continue expanding capability to service the complete value chain for this exciting technology. Red River College (RRC) has responded to industry demand by positioning itself to develop competency in areas highlighted as current regional gaps within the AM value chain. The Technology Access Centre (TAC) at RRC is requesting funds for the purchase of tooling and a 3D modelling software package for the recently purchased Okuma Laser Ex Series MU5000 additive and 5-axis subtractive system. Funds to purchase the equipment necessary to establish an automated Printed Circuit Board assembly cell are also being requested to enhance the ability of applied research team members to collaborate with industry across a more complete supply process. ****The subtractive tooling package is required to render the Okuma MU5000 functional for utilization in conducting applied research and technology demonstration applications. A unique aspect of the Okuma and key justification for obtaining the system is its ability to perform additive manufacturing tasks, and subtractive (machining) tasks within the same product setup. The tooling package identified will provide capability to perform machining of a wide variety of materials in various configurations and working envelopes to enhance set up efficiency while providing manufacturing flexibility. This is important for medium and small scale manufacturing companies who may request proof of concept or prototype realization.****The HyperMILL software package has been identified as essential for understanding the implications of additive with respect to subtractive tasks, and for manipulation of standard 3D model inputs into a finished component. The HyperMILL software contains interface with all aspects of the additive manufacturing to control parameters, while allowing for modelling of the process. ****In addition to supporting equipment for operation of the Okuma system, TAC intends to gain capability within the SmartFactory for automated assembly of Printed Circuit Boards. The automated cell will contain three work stations: a screen printer, a pick-and-place machine and a reflow conveyor oven. With this customizable automated cell for PCB assembly, TAC will be able to provide a multitude of local SME's with a resource for commercialization of electronic circuitry integral to their business. The acquisition of the proposed hardware will supplement existing College capabilities to support innovation for manufacturing in Manitoba.**
