Materials containing soft particles are ubiquitous in daily life and in the industry, and constitute a multibillion dollar worldwide market. However, due to the trial-and-error, empirical nature of their development, an understanding of how the constituent components and processing variables may be manipulated to obtain a desired product function and lower environment footprint, is still lacking. This program will systematically develop these relationships. It will also elucidate how blood clots, which are essentially soft gel particles, embolize blood vessels in diseases such as embolic strokes and pulmonary embolism, and will engineer the drug cocktail most efficient at dissolving embolized clots.
