Each year, 3.5 million people suffer from fractures or cancer that require bone grafts to be fixed. These are usually performed by transferring bone from a healthy location onto the injured site, a painful and risky procedure. Despite this, bone grafts are still the clinic golden standard, since no artificial material matches their performance. Cartilage injuries affect 70% of the senior population, and are similarly challenging to treat. This program addresses both of these challenges, by developing a number of platforms aimed at improving bone or cartilage regeneration with innovative biomimetic approaches based on material surface modification.
