The use of composites and shot peening reduced the mass of Canadian aircraft by at most 5%
whereas senior aerospace engineers believe that mass savings of 15% should have been
achieved. This situation, which deprives the aerospace industry from substantial economic and
environmental benefits, partially stems from the fact that aerospace engineers lack accurate
predictive design tools. Prof. Lévesque's unique research program aims at developing multiscale
predictive models for shot peening and composites to address this specific issue. His
multidisciplinary research program conducted in partnership with the aerospace industry will train
the next generation of aircraft structures experts.
