Today's electrical power grid is proving incapable of meeting growing demand for more eco-friendly energy sources. A smart grid is an electrical grid that gathers, distributes and acts on information about supplier and consumer behaviour to improve efficiency, reliability, economics and sustainability. A microgrid is a localized grouping of both conventional and renewable energy sources, storage elements and loads that can be controlled as one entity, either connected to a centralized grid or acting independently. The proposed research will develop a flexible and adaptive prototype smart microgrid platform incorporating practical power electronics, real-time energy generation, distribution, storage and consumption to facilitate development of optimized next-generation smart grid technology systems that fulfill industry standards and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
