This proposal is concerned with the design and control of innovative robotic and other mechatronic systems for applications in minimally invasive surgery and therapy. The research is of a multidisciplinary nature involving collaboration with clinicians and medical imaging experts and emphasizes the development of image-guided mechatronic systems. The overarching objective is to make procedures for surgery and therapy more efficient, safer and less traumatic. The primary focus is on technology development in two main areas - lung cancer treatment and catheter-based therapy and training. The proposed research will lead to important advances in healthcare and engineering with significant commercial potential.
