This proposal is concerned with the design and implementation of innovative medical robotic and other mechatronic systems. The research is multidisciplinary and involves collaboration with clinicians, medical imaging experts and industry partners. The overarching objective is to make medical robotics-based procedures more efficient, safer and cost-effective. The primary focus is on innovations in three areas: (a) technology based on a class of continuum robots called concentric-tube robots; (b) autonomous systems for surgical training and skills assessment; and (c) robotics-based rehabilitation for post-stroke movement impairment. The research will lead to important advances in healthcare and engineering with significant commercialization potential.
