Investigating a planet's deep interior is challenging because we can't observe the region directly. Because magnetic fields are generated in a planet's core and extend beyond the surface, they can act as important probes of planets. In this project, Prof. Stanley will expand our knowledge of planets by investigating the magnetic fields of Jupiter, Saturn and extrasolar planets. This will put our own planet in context and we will learn about Earth's origin and evolution. We will also gain new insights into how planets make magnetic fields by creating novel computational models of planetary core processes.
