The effects of normal healthy aging on visual perception have important impacts on higher-level mental functions and quality of life. The objective of this renewal application is to deepen our understanding of how aging affects our ability to detect and discriminate visual patterns, and examine how the effects of aging are influenced by dividing attention.The results of these studies will help us to derive quantitative estimates of age-related changes in fundamental visual mechanisms, to determine how these changes constrain performance in complex tasks, and to link changes in perception to physiological changes in the brain.
