bitHeads is a 23-year old software-development company based in Ottawa. One key product focus is their**backend-as-a-service solution, entitled "Braincloud", which provides scalability and customizability for cloud**computing applications. Currently, Braincloud is doing well in games markets supporting tens of millions of**active users.**The goal of this application is to evaluate the feasibility of extending Braincloud into the sports**instrumentation market. The vision is for data from athlete-worn sensors to be managed through bitHeads'**cloud-computing infrastructure to provide clear value to athletes, coaches and to sports fans. While several**companies provide body-worn instrumentation for sports, this cloud-computing approach is unique.**In this grant, ice skate-mounted accelerometer and gyroscope sensors will be designed which will send**wireless data through an local hub through the Braincloud system. An intial prototype of the sensor has been**demonstrated to the Carleton University women's hockey team and coaches and they are interested in**collaborating.**The PIs team has an extensive resesarch record developing the hardware and data analysis for biomedical**monitoring devices. If successful, this research will point the way forward for an exciting new market for**bitHeads' products.
