Disinfectant effects on antimicrobial resistance

Preventing the transmission of infectious diseases is aided by the use of disinfectants on various surfaces, including the surfaces of medical equipment and in hospitals. However, like the misuse and overuse of antibiotics, mounting evidence suggests that the use of disinfectants may lead to resistant bacteria. Virox Technologies Inc., which produces an environmentally-friendly disinfectant with multi-patented Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide (AHP) technology, in collaboration with the Andres lab at McMaster University, will investigate whether disinfectants are promoting bacterial resistance, and if so, how bacterial resistance arises. Understanding the mechanism by which bacteria tolerate and survive disinfection will allow for the development of better disinfectant formulations that will mitigate the generation of bacterial resistance, providing a stronger line of defense in the prevention of infectious diseases.
