Augmented Reality in Shipboard Assembly Systems**

There are a lot of very complex systems in a modern ship. The engineering, design and execution of these complex systems is extremely labour intensive. It is also very difficult finding a labour force with the knowledge of not only their discipline but also the effect of their work on the subsequent systems to be developed. We believe that Augmented Reality will provide an invaluable tool for allowing less experienced fabricators to carry out their work in the most efficient way possible. In this collaborative research, students and faculty at the University of Victoria will partner with one of Canada's leading naval architecture firms to research approaches to using augmented and virtual reality to advance the state of the art in modern manufacturing methods for ship building. The resulting approaches and tools promise to improve the global competitiveness of Canada's shipbuilding industry, provide students with valuable experience in working with real-world models, and offer a realistic test application for novel real-time user interface interactions backed by cloud computing systems.**
