This project builds on our initial successful Engage project which introduced UrtheCast to student's capabilities that provided research into the combined use of optical and a variety Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) to produce Earth Observation analytics. UrtheCast is a BC-based company with offices in Vancouver (HQ), San Francisco, St. Louis, Washington and Moscow. They are developing multiple spaceborne imaging sensors to supply a web-based cloud-hosted processing system, with imagery covering each square kilometer of the globe. To be successful, they need to deliver specific applications to a large and varied customer base at a commercially justified price. The original NSERC Engage provided initial studies with potential long-term research partners in global remote sensing employing sophisticated data fusion and cross training techniques with a variety of remote sensors. In particular, key inroads were made by the student to provide analytics for specific applications to be delivered in an Web-accessible cloud-computing environment. The intent of this proposed EngagePlus grant is to continue to work on the Web-accessible cloud-computing environment, taking the current proposed infrastructure to a testing phase with users. We believe this work will build further opportunities to pursue recommendations for a larger, ongoing applied project in remote sensing and data fusion research and the development of analytics and applications to build on Canada's leadership in applied earth observation.
