The design and development of an Intelligent Air Filter (AIF) capable of communicating air filter status over the Internet is proposed in this research. InnerEco Environmental Inc. and DRAM Innovations have jointly undertaken the development of a proprietary system that uses several sensors, such as LED light and sonic wave, to continuously monitor the build up of dust on an industrial or residential Heating, Ventilation, or Air Conditioning (HVAC) air filter. The applied research project team aims to develop a simple, reliable, and cost-effective web-based solution for users to monitor the status of the HVAC filters, as well as the indoor air quality. ****Conventional HVAC systems left to operate with a dirty air filter consume more energy trying to force air through the filter, while electrostatic air filters lose efficiency as the filter gets soiled. The IAF will save energy by prompting the users to change their air filter at precisely the optimal soil level. This is particularly significant for large industrial air filters that consume large amounts of electricity. In other applications, such as hospital air filters, there is a need to replace the air filters as soon as premature soil threshold levels are reached. ****InnerEco Environmental Inc. and DRAM Innovations seek to partner with Sheridan College's Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Design Technologies (Principal Investigator: Dr. Amin Ghobeity) in Brampton, Ontario to initiate a research relationship for the advancement of an HVAC air filter monitoring unit to address design parameters, proof-of-concept testing, and initial prototyping.******
