英文摘要
The Advanced Oxidation System (AOS) developed by BioLargo Water Inc. is a promising water treatment**technology for disinfection and removal of complex organics from municipal effluents. The system utilizes the**electrochemical manipulation of potassium iodide salt, electrolysis, and expanded graphite adsorption to**function. Evidence suggests the potential formation of iodinated and oxidative species, which likely contribute**to the disinfection and decontamination efficacy. However, the potential formation of reactive intermediate and**potentially genotoxic iodinated organics as by-products of treatment has been raised. The effect of exposure to**AOS treated waters requires further investigation to demonstrate both efficacy and environmental safety of this**process. The proposed study will examine whether genotoxicants, especially iodinated organics generated in**the AOS treated water results in any adverse effect(s) on aquatic organisms. The second objective is to**demonstrate if AOS provides mitigation of genotoxic effects derived from a known genotoxicant,**benzo-a-pyrene. The overall aim of the proposed project is to provide a science-based assessment on this**promising technology and aid BioLargo Water Inc. in understanding the efficacy of this technology while**ensuring the safety of this technology to the environment and human health, thereby providing economic and**environmental benefits to Canada.
