英文摘要
The present Discovery proposal investigates the functional evolution of ion, acid-base and solute transporters in basal vertebrates. We propose to investigate: 1) the transporters responsible for allowing freshwater rainbow trout and zebrafish to invade waters with low ion concentrations; 2) the transporters that both allow and limit sharks ability to enter brackish waters; 3) the unique adaptations in opportunistic scavenging Pacific hagfish, including adaptations to putrefying environments and associated unique aspects of solute acquisition and 4) the fundamental nature of the evolution of solute transport, including integration of these traits into current evolutionary theory of vertebrate evolution. The research will be of intense interest to evolutionary scientists, comparative physiologists, fisheries managers and biomedical scientists.
