Infectious disease outbreaks in animal populations have important environmental and economic costs. Emerging and zoonotic diseases, and production-limiting diseases associated with food animals pose significant challenges for public health. Agent-based, disease transmission models describe the complex host-pathogen-environment interactions of these pathogens. These models describe the way in which individuals interact and reveal patterns that emerge from these interactions. Well-calibrated models provide a tool for making assumptions explicit, using the best available data, and highlighting key factors determining policy needs. When public health intervention strategies are integrated within this framework, decisions on population health can be informed and control strategies optimized.
