英文摘要
The designs of electric vehicles (EVs) have changed over the last century. EVs are popular, but no design has captured the public's imagination. Consumers know that EVs make good economic sense in terms of cost savings and benefit to the environment. Yet, EVs' presence in the marketplace is low. A winning combination of technology and marketing is needed to make EVs desirable and indispensable to the public. To provide novel technological solutions for EVs for the development of affordable, practical EVs, this proposal continues Dr. Kar's well-focused, realistic, feasible, innovative and transformative research activities in EVs, machines, drives and charging technologies. Conventional EVs have a fixed gear ratio transmission connecting the electric motor to the differential and wheels. Replacing the existing transmission with direct-drive powertrain will greatly reduce the mechanical losses (2%-20% depending on operating conditions). It will also improve overall vehicle operating efficiency. It is essential to develop high performing electric machines along with drives, especially, to meet the direct-drive requirements. Also, the existing machine/power electronic converters within the EV can be reconfigured into a 1-phase (level 1) or 3-phase (level 3) charger when the vehicle is not in motion. This motor drive/battery charger integration will allow charging stations to provide electric power to EVs only with 3-phase or 1-phase power outlets. This will greatly save costs on infrastructure development. This proposal's objective: Has breadth and scope by addressing issues associated with research-the design of direct-drive electric machines and their drives with/without integrated charging capability. The research will also help the design/development of "Made in Canada" next-generation EVs. The advancement of knowledge, influencing the direction of thought/activity in the field are also key. The research's vision/impact includes designing EVs that are desirable from both a cost and environmental benefit perspective for the public and spur greater innovation in the field. This will make EVs both desirable and indispensable-increasing their popularity. These benefits will enhance the sales and presence of EVs in the marketplace both in the short- and long-term. This popularity will boost Canada's gross domestic product (GDP) and ensure Canada's EV industry is globally competitive in both the short- and long-term.**
