Leveraging my strong industry reputation and unique access to MRI system architecture, I will build a world class MRI technology group, developing innovative MR imaging concepts and technologies to advance diagnostic MRI as well as new multi-modal applications such as MRI guided therapy and MR-PET. The overall goal is to create and develop new imaging technology, producing more sensitive, more specific and higher resolution imaging, with a significant impact on reducing imaging cost, by reducing data requirements, faster imaging, and alternative electronics and imaging methods.***This research program will utilize state of the art MRI systems with both multi-receive and multi-transmit RF architecture to accomplish the following objectives:***A) Develop MRI receive and parallel transmit (pTx) RF arrays, electronics and data acquisition methods to increase spatial resolution and decrease imaging times and data requirements in MRI.***B) Develop innovative transmit and receive arrays for diagnostic MRI and multi-modal imaging such as MR-PET and MRI guided therapy.***C) Develop optimized RF phase gradient array coils, data acquisition and image reconstruction to advance the new disruptive gradient-free TRASE MRI, minimizing the size, weight and cost of MRI systems, and allowing novel RF-based imaging methods.***In years 1-2, the student will develop simulations of new RF array designs and numerically optimize for performance within Objectives A, B and C. In years 3-5, the student will construct and test RF arrays and then optimize data acquisition and reconstruction strategies to take advantage of improved RF array performance. The student will prepare journal papers and conference abstracts throughout years 2-5 of the program. ***The program's high density receive and transmit array innovations will improve image spatial resolution and quality, reduce imaging times and ultimately reduce the cost of MRI. Development of disruptive technologies such as conductive carbon-nanotube composites and my patented silent, low cost TRASE MRI concept, will ensure a unique and attractive research program for students. This, in combination with the industry level engineering training offered will provide the student with both academic and industry job opportunities.
