Green Chemistry provides a new approach to reconciling the economic and environmental issues associated with chemical manufacture and use. The focus of this Chair in Green Chemistry is the discovery of novel chemical reactions of high efficiency and high atom-economy. In particular, this research will involve: (i) direct coupling of C-H and C-OH bonds as equivalents of C-X (halogen) bonds for various synthesis, (ii) catalytic activation of small molecules (CO2, CH4, and N2) under mild conditions, (iii) solar-energy-harvesting and redox-photo-catalyst free photo-assisted novel transformations, and (iv) umpolung of carbonyl compounds as alkyl carbanions for various nucleophilic reactions.
