With the rise of the Internet, the importance of encryption is growing. Unfortunately, conventional encryption schemes are often based on unproven computational assumptions, which may be violated by the construction of a large-scale quantum computer. Unlike conventional cryptography, quantum key distribution offers unconditional security based on the laws of physics. Continuous variable quantum key distribution has the potential advantages of producing more than one bit of key per signal and leveraging standard detection schemes in optical communication. ****Nonetheless, the security analysis of continuous variable quantum key distribution has fallen behind its discrete variable cousin. This proposal will allow us to improve dramatically the security analysis of continuous variable quantum key distribution protocols. We do so by exploiting and generalizing the many techniques that have been used in discrete variable quantum key distribution to the case of continuous variables. Our work will pave the way to the widespread application of continuous variable quantum key distribution. It will enhance the Canadian leadership position in security research in quantum key distribution.****
