To ensure safety of people and cargo, airports follow strict procedures when it comes to the movement of**individuals throughout various areas. One of the most critical areas of any airport is "airside" (everything**outside of the terminal building), which is the area where aircraft are operated. Biometric technologies have for**many years been used as a way of automating screening of individuals and automated access permission. IDIR**has developed a number of incremental improvements to existing biometric technologies, and will work with a**successful regional airport, Greater Sudbury Airport, to tailor these developments to the needs of the**transportation sector, using the expertise of the airport security staff. As a result of the project, airside access**security will be researched and characterized from an automation perspective, and facial/object recognition**video processing hardware and algorithms will be developed and installed to improve the current access**systems. As well, a 3D fingerprint system will be installed to improve the matching confidence for access**systems. The project will result in an enhanced automated access technology prototype that has potential to**scale to larger airports and other transportation hubs. The project will provide training and HQP opportunities**to Northern Ontario, and will further the state of the art of the biometrics sector.
